I have made this recipe with my kids for over 20 years. It was always a family tradition to sit one evening and decorate these cookies. Now that my kids are older (one married, the other three in college) they enjoy having decorating competitions to see who can have the most complex and detailed designs. We use a mix of powdered sugar and water with food coloring for the icing and then a variety of sprinkles and colored sugars for the details.
