AUNT MAE'S BUTTER COOKIES 
1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. sifted confectioners' sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 1/2 c. sifted flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1/4 tsp. salt

Cream butter. Add sugar gradually. Beat until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and vanilla. Sift dry ingredients. Gradually add to creamed mixture and mix well. Chill dough then shape into 2 inch wide smooth long rolls.

Wrap in waxed paper, chill overnight. Cut into 1/8 inch slices and place on lightly greased baking sheet. Sprinkle with chopped nuts. Bake 6 to 8 minutes in a preheated 400 degree oven.
