4 eggs
1 1/2 c. shortening
3/4 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/8 c. brown sugar
3 c. flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
4 egg whites

Cream shortening and brown sugar. Add eggs. Beat well. Add flour, baking soda and cream of tartar.

Make cookies the size of small walnuts. Dip in egg whites and then in crushed walnuts. Place on greased cookie sheet. Make a small thumbprint in center of each and fill with a small amount of jam. Bake 8-10 minutes until set in 350 degree oven.
