2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1/2 lb. raisins
2 c. boiling water
4 c. flour
2 tsp. baking soda
1 lb. chopped dates

Mix together brown sugar, shortening, salt, cinnamon, ground cloves, raisins and water; bring to a boil. Boil 5 minutes, then let cool. Add flour, baking soda and dates. Mix well. Bake in a slow oven (275) 2 1/2 hours, keeping a shallow pan filled with water in oven bottom.
