1 lb. butter 2 c. buttermilk 8 c. sugar 1 lb. ground candied fruit 1 tbsp. cloves 1 tsp. cardamom Anise 2 tbsp. nutmeg Dash of pepper 2 tsp. salt 2 tsp. baking soda 1/4 c. vinegar 2 c. ground nuts Mix together butter, buttermilk, and sugar. Add candied fruit and spice, all ground. Cook to soft ball stage, low fire. When ingredients are cool, add 6 egg beaten, 2 teaspoons soda dissolved in 1/4 cup vinegar and nuts. Stir in flour, about 5 pounds, so the dough is not sticky. Let set overnight. Roll into rolls size of thumb and cut with knife or scissors in 1/2 inch lengths. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 or 12 minutes. Recipe may be cut in half easily. |
