DATE NUT BREAD 
1 cup dates
1 1/2 cups boiling water
1 tbsp. shortening (Crisco)
2 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
1/4 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 cup sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla

Combine dates, boiling water and shortening; let stand for 10 minutes.

Sift together flour, baking powder, salt and baking soda. Cream sugar and egg. Add nuts to the flour mixture. Add vanilla to dates and water. Add sugar and egg to date mixture. Add flour mix to date mixture gradually and blend. Grease and flour pan.

Bake at 350°F for 35 minutes or until done.
