GREAT GRANDMAS OATMEAL COOKIES 
1 c. shortening
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 c. buttermilk
2 1/2 c. all-purpose flour, "slightly rounded"
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 1/2 c. quick cooking oats
1/2 c. chopped walnuts or sm. size pkg. walnut chips
1/2 c. raisins or 3/4 c.
1/2 c. chocolate chips (may add in more)

Cream together shortening (two sticks of butter), brown sugar, and eggs until fluffy. Stir in buttermilk. Sift together dry ingredients including 1/2 cup white sugar. Stir into creamed mixture with 1 tablespoon cooking oil. Stir in rolled oats, nuts, raisins and chocolate chips. Use 1 tablespoon of batter to make balls. Place 2 inches apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake in moderate oven, 375 degrees, about 12 minutes or until slightly brown.
