GLAZED APPLE SQUARES
Pastry:

2 1/2 cup flour
1 tbsp sugar
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 egg + milk to make 1/3 cup
1 egg white, slightly beaten

Preheat oven to 400°F. Mix all pastry ingredients together. Turn half of dough onto floured surface. Roll into a 10 x 12 rectangle. Place on greased cookie sheet. Add filling. Roll out remaining dough and place over filling. Fold edges together and crimp with fork. Brush with beaten egg white.

Bake 40 minutes until golden. Best served warm.

Filling:

2 cups crushed frosted flakes
5 cups thinly sliced apples
1/2 cup sugar
1 1/2 tsp cinnamon

On bottom layer of pastry, cover with corn flakes to within 1/2 inch of edge. Cover with apple slices. Pour sugar over apples. Sprinkle with cinnamon. (Can just cover apples evenly with sugar and sprinkle liberally and evenly with cinnamon, without measuring). Cover with top layer of pastry and follow remaining instructions.

Glaze:

1 cup powdered sugar
2 tbsp lemon juice

Mix together until smooth. Allow pastry to cool 5 minutes. Drizzle glaze over entire pastry rectangle. Cool at least 15 more minutes before slicing into squares. Pastry will cut easier if cooled completely, but will taste better warm.
