SURPRISE BARS 
1 c. dates
1/2 c. sugar
2 tbsp. flour
1/2 c. water

Cook until thickened and cool.

1 c. brown sugar
1 c. Spry or Crisco
2 eggs
1 3/4. c flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda in 3 tbsp. hot water (alternate with flour)
1/2 c. nuts
1 c. candy orange slices - cut up

Put 1/2 batter in greased 9 x 12 pan. Spread date mixture over, nuts and orange slices. Spread rest of batter over.

Bake for 35 minutes at 350 degrees.
