APPLE PANDOWDY
6 med. tart apples, peeled and sliced thin
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. maple flavored syrup or light molasses
3 tbsp. water
2 tbsp. butter, melted
1 1/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/3 c. shortening
3 tbsp. milk
3 tbsp. butter, melted

Mix apples, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon salt in ungreased 2 1/2 quart casserole. Mix syrup, water and 2 tablespoons butter. Pour over apple mixture.

Mix flour and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Cut in shortening. Sprinkle in milk, 1 tablespoon at a time, mixing until all flour is moistened and pastry can be formed into a ball. Roll pastry to fit over top of the casserole. Place over apples and brush with 3 tablespoons melted butter.

Cook uncovered in 350 degree oven for 30 minutes. Remove from oven and cut crust in small pieces with a sharp knife. Stir pieces of crust in the apples. Return to oven, cook until apples are done and crust pieces are golden brown, 20 to 30 minutes. Serve hot with cream or ice cream. Good cold, too!
