PINWHEEL COOKIES 
2 c. flour
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 c. butter
1 egg
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 c. brown sugar
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and brown sugar; add 1 unbeaten egg and vanilla. Beat well.

Combine dry ingredients in separate bowl; add dry ingredients to wet mixture. Roll 1/2 dough on floured surface to a 10 x 8 rectangle.

FILLING:

1 1/4 (8 oz.) pkg. cut dates
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. water
1/2 c. chopped walnuts

Cook until thick over low heat while stirring. Cool; then add walnuts.

Spread filling on dough; roll on 10 inch side. Wrap in waxed paper; chill 2 hours. Cut into 1/4 inch slices. Bake on greased cookie sheets 8-10 minutes at 400 degrees.
