1 lb. filo dough 2 lbs. walnuts, chopped 1/4 c. sugar 1/2 tsp. cinnamon 1 lb. butter SYRUP: 2 c. sugar 1 c. water 7 tbsp. honey 1/2 lemon Whole cloves Mix chopped nuts, sugar and cinnamon. Melt butter in a saucepan. Butter 11 1/2 x 13 inch pan. Add 4-5 sheets of filo, buttering each sheet. Add walnut mixture. Then add 1 sheet of filo, butter and repeat process until walnut mixture is used. Add 5-7 sheets of filo on top. Make sure to butter each one. cut into diamond shapes. Add 1 clove to each diamond. Bake at 425 degrees for 2-5 minutes. Reduce oven to 350 degrees. Bake 1 hour or until golden brown. Make syrup as soon as baklava is put into bake. Cool syrup and spoon on baklava as soon as it comes out of oven. Serves 12. SYRUP: In a large pan, combine ingredients and cook for approximately 12 minutes or until a fine string forms on spoon. Start timing after mixture comes to a boil. Leave lemon in syrup as you cook. Make sure to squeeze lemon juice into syrup. |
