POPPY'S BAKLAVA | |
1 1/2 lb. filo (freezer section of supermarket) 1 1/2 lb. butter (no substitution) can be up to 2 lbs. 2 lbs. shelled, finely chopped walnuts 1 tsp. cinnamon (amount varies to individual taste) 1 c. sugar Mix walnuts, cinnamon and sugar together. In large pan, place 10 layers of filo, brushing each layer generously with butter. Sprinkle walnut mixture sparingly. Place 2 layers of filo over this. Continue until walnut mixture is gone. Place 10 layers of filo on top. Butter each layer. Cut through with diagonal lines to form diamond or square shapes. Bake in 375 degree oven for 1 hour or until golden brown. SYRUP (should be done first) : 4 c. sugar 3 c. water Juice of a 1/2 lemon 1 tbsp. honey 1 slice orange and lemon rind Cinnamon stick 3 cloves Cook syrup 1/2 hour (or as little as 10 minute). The longer simmered, the more clove and cinnamon taste. IMPORTANT: Make sure baklava is hot (even just out of the oven) when pouring COLD syrup over it. Let stand for several hours or overnight before cutting! |
