CHEAP CHARLIE'S SOS 
1/4 c. biscuit mix or flour
1 1/2 c. milk or milk & cream
1 lb. lean ground round
butter
Salt & pepper
Biscuits or toast

Brown ground meat. Pour off and save fat and other liquids. Add melted butter to saved liquids to make 1/3 cup. Heat fat, liquids and 1 cup of milk in saucepan until warm. Put remaining milk (it must be cold) in jar with lid or blender. Add flour and shake or whirl until lump free. Stir flour mixture into fat/liquid mixture and saucepan and stir until it boils and thickens. Serve over biscuits or toast. Makes about 5-6 servings.

22 years in the Corps. This comes the closest to what I remember and what I make. The only difference is when I pour the fat off I discard it. You can put in an assortment of other things but it stops being Marine Corps SOS, IMO. Sausage instead of ground beef is good too!
