MOM'S TURNIPS AU GRATIN 
1 1/2 lbs. diced fresh turnips
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tbsp. sugar
1 tbsp. butter
1 tbsp. flour
3/4 c. milk
Pepper
1 c. cheddar cheese

Cook turnips for 20 minutes with salt and sugar. Drain. In saucepan, melt butter and blend with flour. Gradually stir in milk until it thickens, stir in cheese and pepper. Put turnips in a 1 1/2 quart casserole and cover with the cheese sauce. Sprinkle with bread crumbs. Bake at 375 degrees until brown, approximately 30 minutes.
