FRENCH BREAD 
1/2 c. warm water
2 pkg. Red Star yeast
1 tbsp. sugar
2 tbsp. shortening
1/4 c. sugar
2 tsp. salt
1 c. boiling water
1 c. cold water
6 1/4 c. flour

Mix first 3 ingredients to dissolve yeast. Combine yeast mixture with shortening, sugar, and salt. Add boiling water to melt shortening and then add cold water. Add flour a little at a time until all is mixed in. Set dough in a warm place and stir every 10 minutes for 1 hour. Next roll out and shape dough and let rise for 1 hour. Cut slits on the top of dough. Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes. Makes 2 loaves.
