1/2 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
2 eggs
1 3/4 c. flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
2/3 c. milk

Cream together shortening and sugar. Add eggs one at a time, beating after each one. Sift together flour, salt, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. Add alternately with milk to creamed mixture. Pour into greased 8 x 8 x 2 inch pan. Bake in moderate oven (350 degrees) 1 hour. Cool 5 minutes. Remove cake from pan. Cool on wire rack.
