CAKE:

2 c. diced apples or pears
1 c. sugar
1 c. all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 egg, beaten
1 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 c. shortening
1/2 c. walnuts, chopped
1 tsp. lemon juice

Mix cake ingredients and bake in 8-inch square pan at 375°F for 40 minutes.

SAUCE:

1/2 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. white sugar
2 tsp. all-purpose flour
1 c. water
1/4 c. butter
1 tsp. vanilla

Mix sauce ingredients and cook until clear. Cut cake and serve sauce hot on top of cake.
