PICKLING FOR BEETS 
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. cider vinegar
1 c. water
2 to 3 peppercorns
1 bay leaf

Boil all above for 5 minutes. Pour over layered sliced beets and onion which have been stacked in a preserving jar or recycled jar. Pour boiling solution over the layered beets.
