3/4 c. shortening or butter 1 1/2 c. sugar 1 egg 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. baking soda 1 c. sour milk 1 c. chopped nuts 1 c. chopped dates 3 c. flour Cream shortening and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and beat thoroughly. Sift flour, salt, baking powder, and soda together. Add alternately with sour milk to creamed mixture. Fold in nuts and dates. Pour into 11 x 17 inch greased, shallow pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Cut into squares when still warm and sprinkle with powdered sugar. Add 2 to 3 teaspoons vinegar to milk to sour it. Use 1 cup of the 3 cups of flour to cut and coat the chopped dates, then fold into the creamed mixture. These are/were always made for Christmas! |
