"MAMA'S" BROWN NUT BREAD 
2 c. dates, chopped
1 1/2 c. water
1 c. sugar
1 tbsp. Crisco
1 egg, beaten
2 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 3/4 c. flour
Dash of salt
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 to 1 c. pecans, chopped

Surprise you, bake this in tin cans. So save your cans.

Over low heat, put chopped dates and water. Cook a few minutes. Add sugar, Crisco, egg, vanilla. Sift together flour, soda, powder, salt. Add to cooked mixture. Remove from heat. Add nuts. Bake in 350 degree oven for 1 hour. Remove from cans and cool. Wrap each in aluminum foil. Freezes beautifully.
