CHERRY SQUARES 
1 c. sugar
1 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. salt
1 beaten egg
1 tbsp. melted butter
1 (No. 2) can tart cherries, drained
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Sift together the dry ingredients. Add butter and egg. Fold in nuts and drained cherries. Bake in well buttered 8 x 11 inch pan at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. When cool, cut in squares and top with the following sauce and whipped cream.

TOPPING:

Juice from cherries
2 rounded tsp. cornstarch
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 c. sugar
1 tbsp. butter
Red food coloring

Mix together and boil until transparent, add the red food coloring if desired.
