2 c. sifted flour
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg
1 c. chopped nuts
1/2 c. chopped dates
1 c. thick applesauce
1/4 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Sift flour, spices, baking powder, soda, and salt together. Mix 1/2 cup flour mixture with nuts and dates. Cream shortening and alternately with applesauce. Stir in fruit and nuts. Drop by teaspoonful 2 inches apart on greased cookie sheet. Bake in 350 degree oven for 15 to 20 minutes or until firm to touch.
