CLARA'S COMPANY BEST PICKLES 
10 med. cucumbers (don't take any sm. ones - 4 inches or larger for they shrivel)
8 c. white sugar
2 tbsp. mixed pickling spice
5 tsp. salt
1 tsp. alum
4 c. cider vinegar

Wash and cover whole cucumbers with boiling water. Let stand until the next morning; drain. Repeat procedure for next 3 mornings. On the 3rd day, drain and cut in strips. Combine sugar, spice, salt, alum, and vinegar; bring to a boil. Pour over cucumbers. Let stand 2 days. On 5th day, bring all to a boil, place in sterilized jars and seal. Makes 7 pints.

Note: Don't let them stand in water only time given - they get soft.
