BEER CAKE 
2/3 c. butter
2 eggs
2 1/4 c. flour
1 c. beer
8 oz. bottle maraschino cherries
1/4 c. cherry juice
2 c. sugar
2 squares bitter chocolate, melted
2 tsp. baking soda
3/4 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. nuts, chopped

FROSTING:

8 oz. cream cheese, softened
1 stick butter, softened
1 lb. powdered sugar
2 tsp. vanilla

Cream shortening and sugar; add eggs and melted chocolate, mixing well. Sift flour and soda; add to creamed mixture alternately with beer and buttermilk. Cut cherries and add to creamed mixture along with cherry juice and nuts. Blend well. Pour into 9"x13" pan and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes. (I use slightly larger pan than the 9"x13".) For frosting, blend ingredients together and spread on cooled cake.
