BROWN BETTY 
2 c. bread crumbs or graham cracker crumbs
2 tbsp. melted butter
3 or 4 med. apples
1 tbsp. lemon juice
1/2 tsp. grated lemon peel
1/2 c. packed brown sugar
1/3 c. hot water

Combine the crumbs and butter; stir over low heat until lightly browned. Place 1/3 in greased baking dish. Pare, core, and slice apples. Arrange half of apple slices over crumbs. Sprinkle with half the lemon juice, lemon peel, and sugar. Cover with remaining crumbs. Pour over water and remaining ingredients. Bake in moderately hot oven until apples are tender, about 30 to 40 minutes at 375 degrees. Serve warm with lemon sauce.
