DATE FILLED COOKIES 
1 pkg. (8 oz.) dates
1 c. sugar
1 c. water
1 tsp. orange rind
3/4 c. finely chopped nuts

Combine dates, sugar and water. Boil for 2 minutes. Beat well until smooth. Add orange rind (grated) and nuts. Cool.

DOUGH:

1 c. butter
1 1/2 c. brown sugar
2 eggs
3 to 3 1/2 c. flour
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 1/2 c. oatmeal
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Add ingredients in order given. Roll out dough 1/8 inch thick. Cut with 2 1/2 inch cookie cutter. Fill bottom cut-out and cover. It's not necessary to seal the edges. Bake at 350 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Makes 3 dozen.
