THUMB PRINT COOKIES 
1/2 c. shortening
1 egg yolk
1 c. sifted flour
3/4 c. chopped nuts
1 egg white, slightly beaten
1/4 c. brown sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 tsp. salt

Cream shortening and mix with brown sugar, egg yolk, and vanilla. Sift flour and salt. Mix together with creamed mixture. Roll into 1-inch balls. Dip in slightly beaten egg white. Then roll in the chopped nuts. Place on ungreased baking sheet.

Bake at 375°F for 5 minutes.

Remove from oven. Quickly press thumb gently on top of each cookie. Return to oven and bake 8 minutes. When cool, place in thumb print tinted confectioners' sugar or jelly.

Makes 2 dozen cookies.
