WHOOPIE PIES (OR GOBS) 
6 tbsp. Crisco
1 c. sugar
1 egg
2 c. plain flour
1/2 c. cocoa
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. baking soda, dissolved in 1/2 c. water

CREAM FILLING:

1/4 c. Crisco
1/2 box XXXX sugar
1/8 tsp. salt
1/8 c. hot water
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla

Cream Crisco until light and fluffy and gradually add sugar. Cream well. Beat in egg. Stir flour, cocoa and salt together. Combine buttermilk and vanilla. Add dry ingredients to creamed mixture alternately with buttermilk, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Beat in soda and water mixture.

Drop by rounded teaspoons onto well-greased cookie sheets, spacing about 1 1/2 inches apart. Bake at 400 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Place on rack to cool. Then fill with cream filling. Makes 2 dozen.
