HISTORIC BUSY DAY CAKE 
1 c. sugar
1/2 c. butter
1 egg, unbeaten
1/2 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 tsp. baking soda
2 c. sifted flour
2 c. raisins
1 c. water

Boil raisins in water 15 minutes. Add baking soda and allow to cool. Cream butter and sugar and add unbeaten egg. Add flour to other dry ingredients and add flour and raisin mixture alternately to creamed mixture. Mix well.

Pour into a greased, floured 13x9x2 cake pan. Sprinkle 3 tablespoons granulated sugar over cake before baking. This makes a nice crusty top. Bake at 350 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes.
