1 1/3 c. all-purpose flour
1 c. sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1/4 c. shortening
1 c. buttermilk
1 unbeaten egg
1 tsp. vanilla
2 sq. (2 oz.) melted unsweetened chocolate

(Ingredients at room temperature)

Sift together flour, sugar, soda and salt into mixing bowl. Add shortening, buttermilk, egg, vanilla and chocolate. Beat 3 minutes (with mixer use low speed).

Turn into 8x8, 9x9 or 11x7 pan, well greased and lightly floured on bottom. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
