RED VELVET CAKE 
1/2 c. shortening
1 1/2 c. sugar
2 eggs

Mix in mixer until creamy.

2 oz. red food coloring
2 level tsp. cocoa

Mix well, add to creamed mixture.

Into 1 cup buttermilk, add 1 teaspoon salt and 1 teaspoon vanilla. Sift 2 cups flour (all purpose) and alternate flour and buttermilk into first mixture. Beat until smooth and fluffy. Put 1 tablespoon vinegar in a cup, add 1 1/2 teaspoons soda. Fold into mixture by hand and bake at 350 degrees for 45 to 50 minutes. (Grease and flour pans first).

ICING FOR RED VELVET CAKE:

5 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk

Mix and cook until very thick. Cool in refrigerator.

1 1/2 sticks butter
1 c. sugar

Cream thoroughly.

Add cooled mixture and beat until fluffy. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla.
