1 c. buttermilk
1 c. sugar
1 c. molasses
1 egg
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. allspice
1 tsp. nutmeg
1 c. lard
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. baking powder
2 1/2 to 3 c. flour

Use all-purpose flour. Sift together dry ingredients with flour except sugar. Mix egg, sugar and lard until smooth. Add molasses to this mixture. Gradually add milk and flour then spread in cake pans making several layers not more than 1/2 inch thick. Spread dried cooked apples. Add spice to taste. Spread between each layer.
