SWEDISH COFFEE BREAD | |
3/4 c. milk 1/2 c. sugar 1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 c. butter 2 pkgs. dry yeast 4 lg. crushed cardamom seeds (bought in co-op) 1 egg 4 c. unsifted flour 1. Scald milk. 2. Add to scalded milk to cool to lukewarm sugar, salt, butter, cardamom seeds. 3. Dissolve 3 packages yeast in 1/2 cup warm water and add to milk mixture. 4. Add to above and beat until smooth with electric mixer, 1 egg and 2 cups unsifted flour. 5. Stir in by hand 2 cups of flour. Cover tightly and refrigerate 2 hours (or up to 3 days). 6. Divide dough in half. Make 2 braided loaves; on floured board. Place on greased cookie sheet, covered, let rise until doubled in bulk. 7. Sprinkle with sugar. 8. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. |
