HOLIDATES 
1 1/4 c. sifted flour
3/4 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
1 c. pitted dates
3/4 c. sugar
1/2 c. shortening
1/2 c. water
1 tbsp. grated lemon rind
1 (6 oz.) pkg. Nestles semi sweet chips
2 eggs
1 c. water
1 c. nuts, coarsely chopped

Sift together first 3 ingredients and set aside. Combine next 5 ingredients cook stirring constantly until dates soften. Remove from heat. Stir in chips, beat in eggs. Add flour mixture alternating with one cup water. Add nuts. Pour in greased 15 x 10 x 1 inch pan. Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool, spread with sugar glaze. Cut in bars.

BUTTER CREAM FROSTING:

3 tbsp. butter
1 3/4 c. sifted powdered sugar
Dash salt
1 tbsp. cream (milk)
1 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter until soft in a medium size bowl. Beat in 3/4 cup of powdered sugar, salt, cream and vanilla until smooth. Beat in just enough of remaining sugar, a few tablespoons at a time until frosting is smooth and holds its shape.
