3 c. sugar
1/4 c. vinegar
1/2 c. water
Cook all together slowly until they form a hard ball in cold water. (Do not stir after sugar has dissolved.) Pour into a buttered pan and when cool enough to handle, pull until porous and light colored. Allow the candy to come in contact with thumbs and fingertips only. Cut in small pieces, using large shears or knife. Arrange on slightly buttered dishes to cool. Flavoring such as 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract or a few drops of oil of peppermint, may be added while pulling.
