GRANNY'S COOKIES | |
1 c. butter 3 c. sugar 3 eggs 1 c. clabber (sour cream) 1 tsp. vanilla 5-6 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. baking powder 1/2 tsp. nutmeg Cream butter and half the sugar. Beat eggs and other half of sugar. Combine both mixtures; add vanilla. Combine dry ingredients; add alternately with liquid. Roll out the dough; cut with cookie cutters. Bake 10 minutes in moderate oven. Granny was Amanda Kipps Hale, of Pratts. She was the mother of Elizabeth Hale Yowell, who often told that her mother always had a supply of these cookies on hand, and when they began to get hard the children would take some down to the spring, dip them in the water and eat them. In Granny's older years, her daughter Lucy Hale always had the same cookies ready when the grandchildren came to visit. |
