CHRISTMAS BREAD (NORWAY) 
1 c. warm milk
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. powdered cardamom
1 pkg. yeast
1 egg, slightly beaten
2 tbsp. soft butter
3 1/4 to 3 1/2 c. sifted flour
1/4 c. chopped citron
1/2 c. raisins
1 egg white, beaten (optional)

Mix milk, sugar, salt and cardamom together. Stir in yeast; let stand, stirring occasionally until yeast is dissolved. Add egg and butter. Mix in flour, citron and raisins using spoon first and hands later. Knead; let rise twice in warm place, covered. Shape into round loaf; place in buttered 9-inch casserole. Cover; let rise for 45 to 60 minutes or until doubled in bulk.

Glaze with egg white before baking, if desired. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 to 40 minutes.
