1 c. shortening 2 c. brown sugar 2 eggs, well beaten, mixed with 2 tbsp. cream or milk 3 1/2 c. flour 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cream of tartar 1 c. chopped dates 1 c. chopped nuts 1 tsp. vanilla Few drops maple flavoring Cream shortening and sugar; add egg and milk mixture. Sift together the flour, soda and cream of tartar. Add to creamed mixture. Add dates, nuts and flavorings. Mix thoroughly and form into rolls about 2 inches in diameter. Chill overnight. Slice thin and place on well oiled baking sheet. Bake in hot oven at 410 degrees for 10 minutes, or until delicate brown. Makes about 100. Wrapped rolls of dough can be kept in refrigerator for weeks to bake at future time. |
