2 c. bread cubes
1 tsp. baking soda
1 c. buttermilk
1/2 c. sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. mixed spices
1/2 c. seedless raisins
1 tbsp. butter

Sprinkle bread with baking soda; add buttermilk; let stand. Combine other ingredients and mix well. Place in greased mold and steam 1 1/2 hours.

Steaming:

Cook, covered over rapidly boiling water the water in the kettle or steamer must be boiling when preparation is complete. Keep water boiling constantly and the kettle covered. Refill when necessary. Do not jar the kettle. Fill mold 2/3 full.
