CHOCOLATE CHEW COOKIES
1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi-sweet chocolate chips
1/2 c. softened butter (1/4 lb.)
1 1/4 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 c. all purpose flour
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. baking soda

In top of a double boiler over simmering water or in a small pan over lowest possible heat, stir chocolate chips until just melted; set aside. In large bowl of an electric mixer, beat butter and 1 cup of the sugar until creamy; beat in eggs and melted chocolate.

In another bowl stir together flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda; gradually add to butter mixture, blending thoroughly.

Place remaining 1/4 cup sugar in a small bowl. Roll dough into 1 inch balls and roll in sugar to coat. Place at least 2 inches apart on greased baking sheets. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 12-14 minutes or until tops appear dry. Let cool on baking sheet for about a minute, then transfer to racks to cool completely. Makes about 3 1/2 dozen.
