SWEDISH TEA RING
1 cake yeast
1/4 c. lukewarm water
1 c. scalded milk
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 c. sugar
6 tbsp. shortening
3 1/2 c. flour
1 egg, beaten
Melted butter
1/2 c. chopped nuts

Soften yeast in water. Combine milk, salt, sugar and shortening. When lukewarm, add yeast and half the flour and beat well. Let rise until very light, then add egg and remaining flour and mix well. Let rise. Roll dough in rectangular sheet on a floured board. Brush with melted butter and sprinkle with nuts. Roll up like a jelly roll and form into a ring on greased baking sheet. Using large pair of scissors, cut ring around edge at 2 inch intervals, leaving inner edge intact. Turn each slice to be flat on pan. Let rise until light and bake in hot oven 400 degrees for 30 minutes. Frost while hot with confectioners' sugar frosting. Makes one large ring.

DIETITIAN'S NOTE:

If you really want a lower fat recipe, the nuts should be replaced with chopped dried fruits or raisins. A reduced calorie soft tub butter could be used instead of the butter. Additionally, use skim milk and replace the shortening with a butter that lists liquid oil as the first ingredients.
