BARBECUED RIBS 
3 lb. country-style loin back ribs
1 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground pepper
2 tsp. pickling spices
1 lg. clove garlic, chopped

Put everything into a large pot. Add water to cover; boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer until ribs are tender, 1 hour. Cool ribs in liquid. Drain and refrigerate until ready to grill. Brush occasionally with sauce while grilling for about 20 minutes. Serves 6.

SAUCE:

1 c. applesauce
1-2 tbsp. soy sauce
1/4 c. honey
1 tsp. prepared mustard
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
1 tsp. instant coffee

Makes about 1 1/4 cups.
