ORANGE TWIRLS | |
2 pkgs. yeast 1/2 c. warm water (not hot) 3/4 c. warm milk 1/2 c. shortening 1/3 c. sugar 1 tsp. salt 2 eggs 1/4 c. orange juice 2 tbsp. orange rind 5 c. flour (all purpose) Soak yeast in warm water. Combine warm milk, shortening, sugar, salt, eggs, orange juice, rind, and half of flour. Beat 2 minutes, add remaining flour and beat 2 minutes more. Turn onto a lightly floured board. Round into a ball until smooth. Grease 2 baking sheets for rolls. Roll to 10 x 16 inch. Spread with softened butter. Fold over lengthwise, cut into 3/4 inch strips. Twist into shapes, bow knots, figure B's, etc. Place several inches apart on greased pans. Cover and let rise until light, 30 to 45 minutes. Bake in moderate oven about 400 degrees, 12 to 15 minutes. Brush with glaze while warm. GLAZE: 1 c. confectioners' sugar 2 tsp. orange juice 1 tsp. orange rind Makes about 2 1/2 dozen. |
