APPLE SQUARES 
1 c. sifted all-purpose flour
1 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/4 c. (1/2 stick) butter
1/2 c. firmly packed light brown sugar
1/2 c. granulated sugar
1 egg
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. chopped pared apple
1/2 c. finely chopped walnuts or pecans
Cinnamon sugar (recipe will follow)

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and cinnamon onto wax paper. Melt butter in saucepan over moderate heat. Remove from heat and beat in sugars, eggs and vanilla with a wooden spoon until smooth. Stir in flour mixture, apple and nuts until thoroughly combined. Spread into a greased 8 x 8 x 2 inch pan. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of the cinnamon sugar mixture. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes. Cool completely in pan. Cut into squares.

CINNAMON SUGAR: Combine 1/2 cup granulated sugar with 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon in a small jar. Cover. Shake thoroughly. Store remainder for future use.
