CHEWY TOFFEE BARS 
3/4 c. soft butter
1/3 c. granulated sugar
1/3 c. brown sugar, packed
1/4 tsp. salt
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
1 egg, unbeaten
3/4 c. sifted regular all purpose flour
3/4 c. rolled oats, uncooked
1 (6 oz.) pkg. semi sweet chocolate pieces (1 c.)
1/4 c. flaked coconut
1/4 c. chopped walnuts

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.

2. Mix butter, granulated and brown sugars, salt, vanilla and egg until very light and fluffy. Mix in flour and rolled oats; blend well. Spread in greased 11"x7" baking pan (or use 9" pan).

3. Bake 30 to 35 minutes or until done.

4. Cool 10 minutes. While bars are cooling, melt chocolate pieces over hot, not boiling, water; stir until all pieces are melted and chocolate is smooth. Spread over baked layer. Sprinkle half with coconut, half with nuts. Cut into bars when cooled. Children and adults alike love these chewy bars.
