FRESH APPLE CAKE I 
CAKE:

1/2 c. butter
2 c. sugar
2 eggs
2 c. self-rising flour
1 tsp. baking soda
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. cinnamon
1/4 tsp. allspice
1/4 tsp. cloves
1 1/2 c. chopped nuts
4 c. finely chopped apples

TOPPING:

1 c. sugar
1 stick butter
1/4 tsp. salt
1/2 c. evaporated milk
1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract

CAKE: Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs and beat until smooth. Sift dry ingredients and spices and add to egg mixture. Stir in apples and nuts. (This mixture will seem dry, but the apples make it moist as it bakes.) Bake in greased 9x13 inch pan at 325 degrees for approximately 45 minutes.

TOPPING: Combine all the topping ingredients in a saucepan and cook over low heat, stirring constantly for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and add 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract. Spread over warm cake in the pan. Yield: one 9x13 inch cake.
