2 2/3 packages yeast 1/3 cup warm water 1 quart milk, scalded 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup shortening 6 teaspoons salt 7-9 cups flour shortening for frying Add yeast to warm water to dissolve. Combine milk, sugar, shortening and salt; add yeast. Gradually add flour until a round ball forms. May be beaten in mixer with dough hook attachment. Cover with cloth and let dough rise until double. Drop from tablespoon into melted shortening and fry like doughnuts until golden brown. Serve with preserves, apple butter, honey, or syrup. Yields 7 dozen biscuits. |
