NUTTY SQUARES 
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) butter
2 egg yolks
2 egg whites
1 tsp. pure vanilla
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 1/2 cups cake flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup brown sugar
walnuts or pecans

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Beat together sugar, butter, egg yolks and one egg white until light and creamy. Stir in vanilla (optional).

Sift together salt, flour and baking powder and add to creamy mixture.

Mix well and transfer batter to a greased 9 x 13-inch pan.

Cover with whole halved walnuts or pecans.

Beat egg white; add brown sugar; mix well. Pour over mixture.

Bake 30 minutes. Cool and cut into squares.
