1 head of lettuce, chopped
1 c. celery, chopped
1 can water chestnuts, drained
1/2 red onion, sliced into rings
1 pkg. (10 oz.) peas, thawed but not cooked
1 pt. Hellmann's mayonnaise
5 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
1/2 c. marble cheese (Co-Jack)
Bacon bits, as desired
2 tsp. sugar

Layer bottom of large salad bowl with lettuce. Sprinkle with 1 teaspoon sugar. Layer with celery, water chestnuts, onion rings and peas. Sprinkle 1 teaspoon sugar over this. Spread mayonnaise over this. Sprinkle eggs evenly over this. Sprinkle cheese evenly over eggs. Top with bacon bits. Chill.
